So life goes on.
My mum has plunged headfirst and enthusiastic into the challenge of replicating Colin Baker's nutjob coat. I wasn't entirely serious when I asked, because I didn't actually expect her to think making me a replica Doctor Who costume was a good idea. Then I expected her to object to the actual coat-of-many-colours design. Dialogue extract:
Ma - "I'll need you to find me of a picture of the front and back."
Me - "...and the sides"
Ma - "Just front and back will be OK."
Me - *opens mouth to protest* *shuts mouth again*
But amazingly she still thought it was a good idea. Last week, she patiently put up with me spending 30 minutes in Guernsey's only fabric shop, obsessively matching colours, and she's taking me to the shop again tomorrow, because I realised I hadn't checked the lining colour and refused to get anything til I was sure. And she appears to have done her homework - I didn't know this, but apparently the BBC took 6 attempts to get the coat right. She's even suggested I make a cat badge out of fimo. Score!
In fact, the biggest difficulty we've had so far is that the only Sixth Doctor episode I have at home is Timelash, which you've probably heard me mention before in the context of its being appalling. I was therefore a little unwilling to put it on, even for the sake of a purist-pleasing coat. And unsuprisingly, I had only to leave the room for ten minutes before hearing a vocal guffaw at the special effects. Such is life.
We were going to watch The Greatest Story Ever Told, but I'm technically still working on that damn essay, so she's gone for Life of Brian instead. She's having a great time, though, and even thinking about giving up the day job to make them en masse. I'm 99% sure she's not serious, but then again the internet can sell proper replicas for $900 or so one could almost make a career of it. My pa keeps making snerky comments about Timelash, but it could be worse.
I keep getting distracted by how darn good the Aeneid is to write about it. In any case, I've just discovered this: http://www.stephen-spender.org/SSMTrust/times_ss_prize/ssmt_evTransPrize.htm
And I'd much prefer to be brushing up the Somnus in hope of entering it. I've got one stanza perfect I know, so I need to think about the rest.
